Mongolia: From the Steppe to the Slum | 101 East

Weather conditions on Mongolia’s steppes are notoriously extreme, with temperatures ranging from minus 40 degrees Celsius in the northern hemisphere winter to 35 degrees Celsius in summer.

But climate change is bringing on more severe weather patterns and with average temperatures rising at three times the global rate, the soil is becoming less fertile, leading to significant livestock death events known as “dzuds”.

Experts predict a new dzud could affect 60 percent of the country. This is an existential threat to Mongolia’s traditional nomadic herders.

101 East meets the families fighting to survive on the steppes and those who have been forced to abandon the nomadic life.

  1. Ghengiz Khan built and solidified his empire by conquering foreign lands, but the empire was loose footed short in development of the Mongolian civilization. Conquest and adaptation were good to get things started, but not enough to sustain an empire of that much of a scale. The legacy for the future was what was missing, a similar issue for the Timurid Empire as well, where there's a huge gap between the past and the modern times.

  2. This hit hard 😬

“Many now contemplate abandoning their culture for a life of poverty and pollution in the country’s capital city.”
Herders think they would have a better life in the city but most end up living in Ger district, the most dangerous and polluted areas in the capital. It’s actually very sad see our government be incapable of improving their (and all Mongolians’) lives.

  6. From Google:

One of the most striking and maybe surprising differences between Mongolia and Inner Mongolia is the language. In Mongolia, the Mongol script was dumped and Cyrillic was used, whereas in Inner Mongolia the Chinese preserved the use of the Mongol script and it can be seen widely on anything from road signs to Chinese banknotes. Although the spoken language is still similar, the original Mongolian written script is seen much more widely in Inner Mongolia than Mongolia itself.
